Proud of their vegetables!

Seedlings were donated to Howick High by WESSA and planted amongst the school flower beds. We planted them on the 12th of October 2016 and we checked them regularly and watered them with the grey water on “Water Wednesdays”. We weeded the beds regularly and tended to them throughout the term until the 22nd of November 2016.

Some of the advantages for this type of sustainable gardening, were that the flower beds already contained fertilizers and the existing plants protected the vegetable seedlings from pests and the weather elements. No new beds needed to be created and this also saved watering more gardens. This mixed planting increased the biodiversity, as well as providing a food source.
