Wonderful Water Festival!
Posted by Manor Gardens Primary School, South Africa on 21 June 2016

On 10th June, as part of the schools termly social function, Manor Garden’s Primary School invited the school community to participate in a ‘treasure’ hunt discovering gems of knowledge about all the water wise activities which earned Manor Gardens Primary their Water Festival.  The children (and parents) viewed all the displays the children had created and tasted water wise foods the children had made.  They completed a question sheet based on the displays and then proceeded to the final station where they received an ‘I am an MGPS Water Hero’ badge and got to make their pledge to save water by placing their ink fingerprint onto a large water drop.

In support of the water wise theme, the fundraising committee and staff had agreed that the food sold on the evening would be meat free and pulse based.  An Umgeni Water Board representative attended as did Food for Life (a vegetarian food relief programme).

On the evening, children and parents got to sign up for the 7 Day Pulse Challenge.  This was an initiative inspired by Ben Humphries in Grade 6 who set himself the challenge after a lesson by Bridget from WESSA (please see previous post).  We will follow-up on those who pledged to take this challenge after the school holidays.  The first 25 participants who provide a brief write-up and photographic evidence of what they did will receive a small sur‘prize’.

In addition, we will be encouraging the children and parents to participate in the international Pulse Pledge challenge which requires you to eat a meat free pulse meal once every week for ten weeks.  For more information on this challenge and recipes see
